It all started in June 2013 as part of the National Day of Civic Hacking, an initiative backed by the White House in support of technology and civic innovation. Following Los Angeles’ election of mayor, Eric Garcetti, the hackathon and makerfaire offered government agencies, businesses, nonprofits and civically engaged individuals the opportunity to work together to move into a new era of solving complex social problems through technology innovation.
Hack for LA events illustrate the power of open government practices, particularly where data is readily available to support meaningful collaboration between the public and private sectors.
